A Legacy Contact is the person you trust to carry out your wishes — usually a spouse, adult child, sibling, or close friend. Adding one is quick, but it’s worth understanding what they can (and can’t) do before you send the invitation.
Two ways to add a Legacy Contact
You can add a Legacy Contact from either of these places in Myend:
- Contacts — tap the + button and choose to add a Legacy Contact directly.
- You (bottom navigation bar) — open the Legacy Contacts panel and follow the on-screen instructions.
Both paths lead to the same result, so use whichever is more convenient in the moment.
What happens after you send the invitation
- You add the person as a contact and mark them as a Legacy Contact.
- Myend sends them an email with your request.
- They can accept or decline the request from that email.
- Once they accept, your account updates automatically to show them as a confirmed Legacy Contact.
You can add more than one Legacy Contact, giving your family a backup if one person is unreachable when it matters.
What a Legacy Contact can — and can’t — do
A Legacy Contact only gains access after your Proof of Life check-ins go unanswered — never while you’re alive and active in your account. Access requires all of the following together: your Access Key, email verification, and Proof of Life having actually triggered. Once that happens, they can:
- View your finalized directives (healthcare, funeral, donor, and others)
- Read the goodbye messages you left for them or others
- See your contact list
- Access shared vault items and documents
They cannot change your plans, delete anything, or access your account in any way while you’re alive. A Legacy Contact is also distinct from a legal executor or financial trustee, though the same person can hold both roles if that makes sense for your family.
Choosing who to invite
Because a Legacy Contact will eventually see sensitive personal information — your directives, your messages, your vault — choose someone you deeply trust. A spouse, adult child, sibling, or close friend are the most common choices.
Legacy Contacts get a free Myend account of their own once they accept your invitation.
